A Letter from the Chief:

I write to you this year with mixed emotions. Our department faced one of the worst natural disasters in recent Indiana history. The November 6th tornado has changed us forever. The loss of our friends and neighbors at the Eastbrook Mobile Home Park has had a lasting impact on our department. The loss of life and devastation has been overwhelming at times. Our hearts and prayers go out to our friends at Eastbrook. We also suffered a personal loss with the damage to our Pollack avenue station.
Our resources in the southern part of the district have been placed at member’s houses throughout the southern district. Rest assured, you will still received the highest level of service that you are accustomed to.
The good news is that we did receive an emergency grant from the Department of Rural Affairs for the construction of a new south station located at the corner of Pollack and Lynn Rd. This grant will cover most of the cost of the new station but we still need some additional funds to complete the project. We cannot thank everyone enough for your generous donations to this point.
The outpouring of support from the community has been tremendous. Your cards, letters and donations have meant so much to our members. I could not be more proud of our firefighters for their response to this disaster. The hours of training and professionalism paid off that November morning.
In addition to the November tornado, we have been very busy this past year with the tremendous growth in our area. Each year our emergency run volume increases with a response last year close to 900 emergency calls. We respond to your call for help from minor EMS calls to multi-alarm fires. Our response area has a wide variety of residential areas as well as commercial and industrial property. We also cover a major part of the Ohio River, several highways, and Interstate I-164.
This past year the Knight Township Fire Department lived up to its pledge by being a progressive department. We trained our entire force to higher training level in all pats of the fire service. We had a record number of members complete advanced training as EMT’s, Firefighter 1 and 2, and advanced Officer training.
Each year we continue to expand and improve the role of our department in the community and surrounding areas. We continue to be involved in the fight against muscular dystrophy. Along with your assistance this past year, we raised over $10,000.00 that was donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. We have a speaker’s bureau available to youth groups, community organizations, schools, and day care centers. We believe education is the key in saving lives and property from fire.
Even though the Knight Township Fire Department is a full volunteer fire department, we have a crew on duty at the station 24 hours day, 7 days a week, ready to answer an emergency call. We have a force of men and women who volunteer their time with the only pay being the satisfaction of knowing they are helping their community.
The costs of providing the best emergency services are expensive, and we are always searching for new ways to keep us on the leading edge in our industry. This would not be possible without the continued support from our community. Once again we are asking for your financial support to help us keep growing. As a 100% volunteer organization we are dependent on your donations to help offset the expensive cost of public service. Donations from residents and area businesses are vital in order for us to maintain and upgrade our lifesaving and support equipment. Your tax-deductible donation helps provide specialized training and purchase equipment that the normal budget cannot afford.
We are proud of the men and women of the Knight Township Volunteer Fire Department who have devoted their lives to serving the township and improving the department. Once again, thank you for your support.
Sincerely,

Chris Wathen, Chief
